Sisters Carson Burnham and Erin Evans set out to create a space for Portland’s growing community of dance fitness enthusiasts in June, 2023, when they founded Body Positive Dance Fitness. “Our mission is to bring together folks from around Maine and from away who find dance fitness classes to be a form of exercise they truly enjoy, rather than one to be endured,” said Carson Burnham, President. “We offer several classes a day, seven days a week, to students of all levels, abilities and body types. We are not trying to change anyone or judge people based on a perceived ability – what brings this community together is the simple fact that dancing is fun, and dancing together is even more fun.” With more than 15 of Maine’s top instructors, Body Positive Dance Fitness offers classes in a variety of formats. While every instructor has a unique style and every class is different, students of all levels, experiences and body types are welcome. “This is a place where no one feels judged. On the contrary, dance fitness students and instructors celebrate one another for who they are.” Carson and Erin’s vision included the renovation of a vacant 7,000 square foot space in the Pine Tree Shopping Center, which is now the home base for Body Positive Dance Fitness. The studio boasts three dedicated dance spaces for group classes like Zumba and SHiNE, a lounge area and store, spacious restrooms and offices, a yoga room, and special lighting and sound equipment. “It was important to us to create a space for this community to come together in a relaxing environment where they can socialize and support one another. A common characteristic of dance fitness students is their openness and acceptance of others, and we wanted to give them a place to call their own,” said Erin Evans, CFO. Carson and Erin hope to see the studio become a place where women and men come to grow, find community, nourish their love of dance, honor their bodies, and of course have fun. “Whether you’ve been dancing your whole life or have never felt confident on the dance floor, this place is for you. At Body Positive Dance Fitness, we welcome everyone for who they are – right now. This is a place where the only expectation is that everyone is treated with kindness, dignity and respect.” Body Positive Dance Fitness is now offering classes several times a day, seven days a week.
